We help employers big and small stay compliant with commuter benefit mandates in their cities and states.

Meaningful savings for employees

When employees use pre-tax funds to pay for their commute, they lower their taxable income and can save up to 30% on transportation costs.

Employers save, too

For every $100 employees elect towards pre-tax contributions, their employer saves $7.65 in FICA payroll tax obligations.

Beyond pre-tax

We work with employers to offer additional programs that help employees get to work, including bikeshare memberships, electric scooter rentals, Guaranteed Ride Home, and EV charging.

Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions? We’ve got answers!

What are commuter benefits?
Chevron

Traditional commuter benefits are pre-tax employer-provided benefits that help employees access transportation for commuting and getting around their city. In practice, commuter benefits may also refer to other services or benefits offered by an employer that make getting to work easier (think bikeshare memberships or commute planning services).

For more information about eligible expenses, cost savings, and FAQs, see our comprehensive guides to pre-tax commuter benefits and post-tax commuter benefits.

What cities and states have commuter benefits mandates?
Chevron

As of 2026, the following major metropolitan areas have implemented a commuter benefits mandate for employers: Chicago, New Jersey, New York, Philadelphia, the San Francisco Bay Area, Seattle, and Washington DC. For a complete list, see our guide to commuter benefit mandates by city.

How do employees save money?
Chevron

Pre-tax commuter benefits let employees set aside money from their paycheck (up to the $340/month cap set by the IRS) to pay for eligible transit, vanpool, and commuter parking expenses. Because the money is set aside before federal taxes are applied, they’re taxed on a smaller portion of their income and can take home more of the money they earn. Savings depend on where the employee lives and how much they earn, but many people save up to 30-40% on their commute.

How do employers save money?
Chevron

For every $100 employees elect towards pre-tax contributions, their employer saves $7.65 in FICA payroll tax obligations. If 100 employees contribute $150 per month, that’s $180,000 in annual contributions and $13,770 saved per year in payroll tax savings.

What employers are a good fit for Jawnt?
Chevron

Our employers span across industries, from healthcare to software, quick service restaurants to consultants. We work with small businesses up through large enterprises. If your company wants to expand perks to attract or retain employees, has a focus on sustainability, or is grappling with return to office, we’d love to talk!

How long does it take to get started?
Chevron

We recommend starting with Jawnt two months before you want your employees to start using their benefits, but we can move as quickly as two weeks.

How does pricing work?
Chevron

Jawnt’s pricing is based on the number of employees, number of benefits offered, and level of support & enterprise features provided.
