Traditional commuter benefits are pre-tax employer-provided benefits that help employees access transportation for commuting and getting around their city. In practice, commuter benefits may also refer to other services or benefits offered by an employer that make getting to work easier (think bikeshare memberships or commute planning services).
For more information about eligible expenses, cost savings, and FAQs, see our comprehensive guides to pre-tax commuter benefits and post-tax commuter benefits.
As of 2026, the following major metropolitan areas have implemented a commuter benefits mandate for employers: Chicago, New Jersey, New York, Philadelphia, the San Francisco Bay Area, Seattle, and Washington DC. For a complete list, see our guide to commuter benefit mandates by city.

Pre-tax commuter benefits let you set aside money from your paycheck (up to the $340/month cap set by the IRS) to pay for eligible transit, vanpool, and commuter parking expenses. Because the money is set aside before federal taxes are applied, you’re taxed on a smaller portion of your income and can take home more of the money you earn. Savings depend on where you live and how much you earn, but many people save up to 30-40% on their commute.
Jawnt works nationwide–we also work directly with transit providers like BART, the MTA, and WMATA to make sure that no matter where you are, Jawnt can help you commute.
