There are plenty of platforms that offer transportation and commuter benefits to employees. We happen to think Jawnt is the best, but if you're considering alternative commuter benefits providers, like WageWorks (now part of HealthEquity), keep reading for a few key differentiators.

Commuter Benefits Experience: Jawnt vs. WageWorks

WageWorks has long been a name in the commuter benefits space, but commuter benefits have never been their sole focus. WageWorks is primarily an HSA and FSA administrator, and in 2019 it was acquired by HealthEquity, one of the country's largest health savings account custodians.

When commuter benefits are an afterthought at the corporate level, that attitude filters down to the product and the employee experience. HR administrators who've used WageWorks often describe an interface that feels rigid and legacy–because it is. And when employees don't understand or can't easily use their commuter benefit, they simply don't. Low participation is the predictable result of a provider that isn't fully invested in the benefit.

With Jawnt, improving the commuter experience and saving organizations is our entire mission. Getting your employees where they're going, and making sure they actually use and understand their benefit, is what moves us forward every day. Our clients consistently see enrollment rates climb when they switch from a legacy provider like WageWorks.

Commuter Benefit Program Customization and Flexibility

WageWorks is built on a one-size-fits-all model: employees elect a monthly benefit amount and receive pre-tax savings with a standard debit card. That works fine as a baseline, but it doesn't give HR teams the tools to design a benefit that actually reflects how their employees commute today. Jawnt works directly with employers to design more flexible, competitive benefits. Want to offer custom subsidies by location or employee type, or encourage bike commuting to reduce parking demand on campus? Jawnt makes it possible with customizable, goal-oriented benefits design.

Jawnt is at the forefront of new fare payments technology. Whereas many legacy commuter debit cards don’t support contactless payments, the Jawnt Pass debit card is Tap-to-Pay enabled, giving organizations like Harvard University the flexibility to move beyond a monthly pass model and support hybrid workers with a pay-as-you-go option.

We also cover post-tax benefit options that most platforms overlook. In the Philadelphia area, for example, we work with the Indego bike share program so employees who bike to work can save, too. That flexibility extends nationwide, ensuring your program reflects the real commuting landscape your employees navigate every day.

Admin and Employee Support: Why Employers Switch from WageWorks

WageWorks, embedded inside a company of HealthEquity's scale, routes employee support through a centralized national call center–one that handles HSA claims and FSA paperwork alongside commuter questions. For employees who already find commuter benefits confusing, that experience doesn't help.

Jawnt is loved by employees and admins alike, in large part because of our responsive, local, and–most importantly–very human support team. Whether it's by chat, email, or phone, we're here to help employers and employees alike. If a member of your organization has a question about their benefits, take it off your to-do list, and give them our number instead.

Our support services don't just stop at the Jawnt platform, but extend to our transit partners as well. Having trouble activating a transit card? We can help with that, too. Jawnt has an entire support page dedicated to these and other issues, and we proactively notify anyone who is in danger of missing out on a benefit. Less friction means more employees using their benefits on transit, and that's a win for everyone. We won’t keep you waiting, either–our average response time is under 10 minutes.

HRIS Integrations: Jawnt vs. WageWorks

WageWorks connects with HR systems via direct integration or SFTP, but the setup can require significant IT involvement and red tape.

Jawnt offers direct API integration with all popular HR benefits platforms–like ADP, BambooHR, Gusto, Justworks, Square, TriNet, and Workday. If your integration isn't set up to work with Jawnt yet, you can simply send us your HR roster via flat file over SFTP (Secure File Transfer Protocol), and we will provide both the documentation and the server your team needs to transfer an updated roster on a regular basis.
